What does Svenska kraftnät do? Balance in an entire electrical system
Follow the connection between power grid, frequency and reserves - and see where your own flexibility can fit in.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN ONE MINUTE
- Svenska kraftnät has system responsibility and manages the transmission network.
- 50 Hz describes the frequency of the system, not the electricity price.
- A home battery must be part of the right technical and contractual solution to contribute reserves.
A responsibility for the whole
Svenska kraftnät has system responsibility for the Swedish transmission system. Production, consumption and transmission need to work together, even when a facility goes down or demand changes.
It is a different task than selling an electricity contract to your household. Your question about the contract's mark-up therefore belongs to the electricity retailer, while the network company handles your local connection. Distinguishing the roles helps you interpret news about the system.

What does the frequency tell us?
The nominal frequency of the Nordic synchronous power system is 50 Hz. Deviations from that level are related to the balance between supplied and used active power. Frequency maintenance is a technical system task, not a price model for your invoice.
A high electricity price and a frequency deviation are therefore not the same thing. A market price graph helps you understand the cost situation. A frequency graph tells about another part of the system's function.

Planning needs reserves
Plans and bids are made before delivery, but the outcome may differ. Different reserves are used for different needs and time scales. Svenska kraftnät describes, among other things, FCR-N, FCR-D, aFRR and mFRR.
You don't need to know every abbreviation to be an informed customer. Start with the question what an offer refers to: readiness to change power, actually delivered energy or another service. It determines how the price and compensation are to be interpreted.

The home battery is part of a larger solution
A battery can be charged, discharged and controlled, but its rated power is not the same as approved reserve capacity. Pre-qualification, governance and agreements need to be in place. The participation is managed within a solution with a provider of balancing services.
Therefore, ask for a description of your particular product and service. Ask which functions are active, which capacity is reserved and what you can use at the same time. A picture of a battery is not enough to show what the facility is approved for.

From Community Benefit to Your Agreement
Own use of solar electricity, moving between electricity prices and reserves are different uses of flexibility. They may need to be coordinated, since the same power and stored energy should not be considered freely available for several tasks at the same time.
A separate control question is: if the battery is ready for a backup, what happens to my planned evening use? Ask the supplier to describe the priority and compensation after fees. Then the benefits of the system will also be understandable for your home.

FAQ.
Can I buy electricity directly from Svenska kraftnät?
Svenska kraftnät does not sell your usual household contract. The electricity retailer sells the electricity to you according to the agreement, and the grid company is responsible for the transmission to the home.
Are all batteries automatically included in support services?
Nope. Technical qualification and agreement required. Check what is actually included in the offer for your facility.
